Reserve your time slot to visit the James Ensor House here (recommended!)
On Tuesdays, 13 and 20th January, we will be closed due to painting work.
Thanks to the generous loan from the city of Sint-Niklaas, the James Ensor House has succeeded in bringing together an exquisite selection of works by Henri Evenepoel (1872-1899) in confrontation with works by James Ensor.
There are similarities between the two artists in both style and subject matter. Both artists are great colorists and, thanks to their pictorial bravura and keen observation, they are able to bring everyday subjects, landscapes, and city scenes to a higher level. Both also painted a large number of portraits, of family members, friends, and fellow painters. Once you’ve seen Evenepoel’s tender portraits of children, you’ll never forget them.
Just as Ostend was the perfect setting for Ensor, so was Paris for Evenepoel, who died there in 1899—a few days before the turn of the century—of typhoid fever. Since they probably never met, the James Ensor House is delighted to bring these two masters into dialogue with each other for the first time.
Tip: Have you previously visited the Ensor House and Experience Centre and are only here for the exhibition? In that case, buy your ticket at the box office; you don't need to worry about time slots.
Last entrance at 5:00 PM.
